Workshop
Catania, Italy
Maggio 2018
Tutors: Pietro Airoldi e Tristan Boniver
Host institution: Abadir Accademia di Design e Comunicazione Visiva

Kintsugi is the name of an ancient Japanese art which consists in the repair of ceramic objects through the use of liquid gold, silver or lacquer mixed to gold dust. The fragments are reassembled and the object takes on new life through the fracture lines (repaired) and embellished with gold. The practice stems from the idea that what is damaged is not eliminated but repaired so that the evident signs of the repair make it unique.

The workshop, curated by Pietro Airoldi, was held by Tristan Boniver (Rotor, Brussels) in collaboration with Guglielmino Cooperativa, a company that has been active in the production of bricks and preparations for cocciopesto plasters since 1870 using fragments of bricks and natural elements. The students focused on material flows and reuse strategies, carrying out small repairs in public contexts:12 interventions on the seafront, partly to repair existing disused artifacts (a wall, a staircase, a platform) and partly to introduce a new use of the existing environment (a chaise longue, a small table). These elements have been designed in order to have a visual connection between them so as to induce the visitor to discover disused stretches of seafront.

The action of reparation therefore took on the meaning of taking care of community spaces as a gesture of benevolence towards a person in need.

“The action was inspired by the ancient Japanese technique of repairing ceramic objects in which the fracture lines are not camouflaged, but highlighted and embellished by the use of gold dust.”
